Varsity baseball dropped a doubleheader to McBain Wednesday night, 1-12 and 11-17. Brodie Gross went 6 for 7 with 2 doubles. Corbin Allen was 2 for 5 with a triple. Jake Huspen hit a double and was 3 for 6 on the night. Brady Hunter and Ethan Pemberton each added a hit.

Varsity softball swept St. Louis 6-3 and 14-4 last night. Jessica Campbell threw 10 strikeouts in game one to earn her 11th win of the season. Katie Kanary pitched game two and got her first complete game of the year. Cali D'Amour hit 5 for 6, including a homerun and three doubles and she racked up five RBI. Jillian Hartman hit her first high school bomb while going 3 for 6. Kanary was 2 for 4 and also hit a homer. #leadthecharge

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Anna Wood (varsity softball) and Corbin Allen (varsity baseball) Anna went 11 for 13 at the plate last week. She had an insane defensive week at shortstop and was loud and proud in the dugout. Corbin has been on fire at the plate and on the mound. He is hitting an impressive .500 on the season and leading the team in many offensive categories. On the mound, he has struck out 77 batters in 44 innings. #leadthecharge

Varsity baseball took a doubleheader from Kalkaska Monday night, 2-1 and 6-4. Brodie Gross picked up the first win, throwing eight strikeouts, walking four, and giving up four hits and a run. Corbin Allen took the game two win with nine strikeouts, two walks, six hits and four runs. At the plate, Allen was 3 for 4 with a double and a triple. Gross hit 3 for 5 with a double. Trevor Cvitkovich was 2 for 4, Vaughn Gaertner was 1 for 3, and Aydden Clark had two hits, including a homerun. #leadthecharge

The golf team played in the Jim Glynn Rayder Invitational at the Belvedere Golf Club on Monday and placed 6th out of 15 teams with a team score of 366. Jimmy Calvin shot an 87 for 18th place. Alex Hager took 31st with a 92. Gibsen Barnett scored 93 to finish in 35th place. Bryce Malcolm had a 94 to take 38th. Calvin notched two birdies on his way to a top 20 finish while Barnett stepped up with a top 40 finish in his first career varsity start. Next up is the Nightmare Invite on Wednesday and MHSAA regionals on May 28. #leadthecharge

The soccer team played Boyne City Monday night and, despite our girls battling hard, Boyne was able to get the win 6-1. Edie Boik had the goal off of a free kick. It was a long rocket of a shot over the head of the keeper. Emma Kuziel had 10 saves.

Varsity softball played in a tournament at Central Montcalm on Saturday and came home champions. Jessica Campbell pitched a no-hitter in game one's 10-0 victory over Kent City, striking out 12 of the 18 batters she faced in six innings. The Vikings trailed Central Montcalm 0-1 for most of game two before coming back to win 5-2. Anna Wood hit 6 for 7, Kendra Allen was 5 for 8 and Jillian Hartman hit 3 for 6. The track team competed at Charleviox yesterday in the D3 regional championships. In order to make it to states, competitors must place in the top two of the event or meet the qualifying time/distance/height. Out of 15 teams the boys team took 7th and the girls placed 8th. Making it to states again this year is Rylan Finstrom in discus and shot, and she broke her own record in shot with a throw of 44’3”. Kaleb Hall threw a monster throw in his last discus attempt to take third, breaking the school record with a throw of 140’5” and making it to states. Ethan Kucharek took 3rd in the 800 meters, but made the state qualifying time of 2:03. Andrew Moore is going back to states in the 3200 meters, taking first at regionals. The men's 4 x 800 team of Tristan Demlow, Kale Black, Drew Moore, and Ethan Kucharek took 2nd and will be going to states. Other top finishers were: Leo Bertoncello, 6th in long jump and 7th in the 100 meter; Cole Smith, 6th in the 400 meter; Tristan Demlow and Kale Black, 4th and 6th respectively in the 800 meter; the men's 4 x 100 team, 7th; the men's 4 x 400 team, 6th; Allison Helinksi, 6th in discus; the women's 4 x 800 team, 5th; the women's 4 x 400 team, 4th; Nico Triebold, 5th in the 800 meter; Maya Duncombe, 8th in the 400 meter. #leadthecharge

The golf team was on the Moor Course at Boyne Highlands on Tuesday for the Harbor Springs Invitational. A team score of 377 put the Vikings in 7th place out of 11 teams. It was a struggle from the jump on a challenging golf course. Bryce Malcolm shot a 90 to take 19th place, finishing strong with a flurry of pars on the back nine. Alex Hager finished 23rd with a 93, beating his personal best round by a stroke. Next up is the Jim Glynn Invite at Belvedere. #leadthechrage.

Varsity baseball split against Onaway Tuesday night. Corbin Allen pitched 5.2 innings in the 4-7 game one loss. He struck out 10, walked five and gave up three hits and five runs. In relief, Brodie Gross had one strikeout and allowed two walks, one hit and two runs. Gross pitched two innings of game two's 21-7 win. He gave up six walks, and four runs while striking out two. Reliever Vaughn Gaertner, pitched three innings and struck out three, allowing two hits and three runs. On offense, Allen hit 6 for 7 with two doubles, three runs, six RBI and five stolen bases. Jake Huspen was 4 for 6 with two RBI, four runs and a stolen base. Austin Schwartz went 3 for 5 with a double, an RBI and four runs scored. Gross hit 3 for 6, scoring three runs, collecting four RBI and stealing two bases. Dayton Joseph was 2 for 4 with an RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base. Mason Strohpaul got a hit with 2 RBI and scored two runs.

The tennis team traveled to Boyne Mountain for an all doubles team tournament yesterday. Sweeping the one spot were Brittlynn Elliott and Jocelyn Millikin with wins over Boyne, Charlevoix, and East Jordan. Brylee Sheldon and Katie Mahaffy won all three matches in the number 2 position. GHS had 10 teams in the tournament with multiple wins. Regionals are Friday in Traverse City. #leadthecharge

The soccer team took on #1 in the conference TCSF last night and lost 2-5. Edie Boik and Lilly Odden each scored a long ball shot over the TCSF keeper's head. Each goal was assisted by Olivia Duba. Sixty students from Mr. Kulhanek's creative writing classes competed in rap battles last week. Each student composed a slam poetry piece and performed it during class, competing against another student as determined by a bracket system. Students from other classes were also in attendance and all observers voted, moving winners along in the bracket. When all was said and done, Brett Peterson was crowned the champion and Joyce Van Dixhoorn and David Longstaff tied for second place.  #leadthecharge

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Emily Kline (JV softball) and Gage Modert (varsity golf) Emily Kline was 1 for 2 with a double and one RBI during our season finale vs. Elk Rapids. She had several put-outs on defense playing third base vs. the Elks. Overall, Emily led our team in doubles (5) and triples (2) this year. She was second on the team in batting average (.375), hits (17) and RBI (18). Gage has put together an impressive season so far with a team-best scoring average of 86.1 and a few top-10 finishes to his name. Gage finished in the top 14 of the LMC championship to earn an All-Conference Honorable Mention and has stepped up as a senior leader on our team. #leadthecharge
