Grayling Vikings Powerlifting had a great meet at Millington this weekend. Every athlete beat their previous personal records! Kyleigh Ross, Rylan Finstrom and Gavin Cvitkovich all placed 3rd and Jeremy Meyer placed 4th.

The ski team competed in the Lake Michigan Conference Jamboree and Jug Band Soirèe on Monday at Schuss Mountain. Both teams finished in third place. In slalom, the girls were led by Tierney Hartman in 7th place, Nico Triebold in 8th, Quincy Stirling in 13th and Luna Gauthier in 16th. In giant slalom, Nico finished 4th, Quincy took 8th place, Dakota Batway came in 11th and Josie Calvin placed 16th. On the boys side, the slalom leaders were Trevor Cvitkovich in 4th place, Teague Hartman in 11th, Jericho Renn in 13th and Brett Peterson in 17th. In giant slalom, Trevor took 3rd, Jordan Renn finished 11th, Teague placed 12th and Marqus Parker finished 15th.

In a tough-fought game Thursday night, the girls varsity basketball team lost to Charlevoix 38-49. We did not play our best game and ended up coming up short in the end. The game was close throughout until the last few minutes of the 4th when we had to go for steals and picked up fouls, placing a good free throw shooting team on the line. We were led by Makayla Watkins with 24 points and Jill Hartman and Ali Helinksi chipped in with 4 apiece.

The wrestling team won the 17-team Ovid Elsie tournament on Saturday, narrowly beating Clare and Birch Run. Individual champions were Ryan Stade (175 lbs.), Jake Huspen (190 lbs.), Danny Bonamie (215 lbs.), and Logan Malonen (285 lbs.). Alex Moore (106 lbs.) and Caleb Baker (113 lbs.) took 2nd place. Payton Collen (165 lbs.) took 3rd. Cole Smith (126 lbs.) and Jordan Peters (157 lbs.) placed 4th. Congratulations to Logan Malonen for winning his 150th career match on Saturday! In Friday night’s girls tournament in Ovid-Elsie, Molly Wright (115 lbs.) took 4th place. Up next for the team is a dual in Tawas on Wednesday.

In ski racing action Thursday night, the GHS skiers competed in a Lake Michigan Conference hootenanny. The girls team finished second behind Harbor Springs. The GHS girls won the slalom and were led by Nico Triebold in 3rd, Tierney Hartman in 7th, Quincy Stirling in 10th and Luna Gauthier in 12th. In giant slalom, Nico took 5th, Tierney was 8th, Quincy finished 11th and Luna placed 16th. The boys finished third overall. In slalom, Trevor Cvitkovich placed 9th, Brett Peterson was 13th, Jordan Renn took 14th and Teague Hartman finished 16th. In GS, Trevor took 5th, Jericho Renn finished 9th, Jordan was 18th and Brett finished in 20th place. The team's next race is Monday at Schuss Mountain.
The wrestling team wrestled shorthanded Wednesday night and still came home from Glen Lake with two wins. The team beat Frankfort 39-30 and Glen Lake 47-21. Winning two matches were Alex Moore, Molly Wright, Max Huspen, Jordan Peters, Payton Collen, Danny Bonamie and Logan Malonen. Winning one match were Jake Huspen and Zeke Wright. Next up for the team is Ovid Elsie on Friday and Saturday.

Varsity boys basketball lost a hard fought game to Boyne City Tuesday night by the score of 52-49. The boys are back on the road tonight at Elk Rapids.
JV boys basketball traveled into Rambler country and pulled out an electric victory against Boyne City Tuesday night. A physical game ultimately gave way to the Vikings who were led by Myles Mead with 16 points, David Neal with 11, and a clutch 7 points from Noah Gabriel.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Cali D'Amour (varsity basketball) and Maddox Mead (varsity basketball)
Since the winter break, Cali has stepped up on the offensive side and maintained her defensive hustle. Cali has racked up two double-doubles, one against TCSF and the other against Kalkaska.
Maddox paced our offensive attack at Kalkaska with 13 points. He knocked down a couple of perimeter shots, but more importantly, he found gaps in their zone and looked to attack the rim. Defensively, he brought energy and pressure that helped his team hold Kalkaska to 38 points. Maddox pulled down six rebounds, as well as having six deflections and three steals.

The ski team skied in a nine-team invitational on Monday. Both teams (boys and girls) finished second overall in team results. The girls were led in slalom by Quincy Stirling in 7th place, Nico Triebold in 9th, Luna Gauthier in 17th and Dakota Batway in 23rd. In giant slalom, Nico finished in 5th, Quincy in 9th, Luna in 15th and Dakota in 18th. The boys were led in slalom by Trevor Cvitkovich in 2nd place, Teague Hartman in 10th, Jericho Renn tied for 16th and Brett Peterson in 18th. In giant slalom, Trevor took 6th, Jericho was 13th, Teague placed 17th and Marqus Parker came in 20th.

The Student Voice and Leadership Committee debuted its new Party Cart last week! Loaded with bubbles, music and snacks, Mr. Burkett and SVLC members visit random classrooms for a brief celebration if students have been on time and following school rules.
Congratulations to Drew Moore who competed Sunday at the University of Michigan High School Indoor Track Invitational. He placed 9th out of 46 elite runners in the 3200m run with a time of 9:37.52!

Logan Malonen (285 lbs) placed 2nd. Ryan Stade (175 lbs) placed 3rd. Danny Bonamie (215 lbs) placed 4th. Payton Collen (165 lbs) placed 5th. Max Huspen (138 lbs) and Jordan Peters (157 lbs) placed 6th. On Friday night, Mandy Andrews (120 lbs) placed 4th and Molly Wright (115 lbs) placed 6th at the Mio Girls Invitational.

Congratulations to Nicholas Michels for taking first place in the 2nd annual GHS 1V1 Super Smash Tournament! We had 66 entries in all. Patrick Hayden took second place with a close 2-3 loss to Nicholas Michels. Alex Graziano took 3rd place, and Zander Tinker took 4th overall.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Kendra Allen (JV basketball) and Trevor Cvitkovich (varsity skiing)
Kendra Allen has a non-stop work ethic in games and practice. Her hustle during games brings up the intensity of the team and drastically changes the play on the court. Kendra had a double-double on January 17 with 13 points and 10 rebounds!
Trevor started his senior campaign with a great performance in GS. In our first Lake Michigan Conference meet on January 11 at Nub's Nob, Trevor placed 5th in giant slalom. In slalom, Trevor was sitting in 4th place after his first run before blowing a shoe for a DQ. Trevor provides great leadership, humor and fun to the ski team.
Today, Bryce Malcolm signed his National Letter of Intent to bowl at Davenport University! Congratulations, Bryce!
Varsity boys basketball beat Kalkaska last night 48-38. The boys are now 6-4 on the season. Their next game is at Boyne City on Tuesday.
