Mrs. Heavner has introduced Computer Science into STEM through Code.org.
In first grade, they are focusing on drag and drop, the basics of programming. The drag-and-drop blocks represent real programming commands.
They also did some unplugged "happy maps." In this activity, students were introduced to an algorithm, which, in computer science, is a set of steps that solves a problem. They were able to do this by guiding a friendly orange cloud to a strawberry through a series of arrows. GES is excited to offer these opportunities to our students!

Our first- and second-grade students are having fun learning about sounds in STEM with Mrs. Heavner. They watched sound by using rice on a drum, they saw sound waves move water by using a tuning fork, and they made Kazoos to see how vibration produces sound. Way to make learning fun through hands-on activities!

Ms. Keys' class worked extremely hard and counted all the way to 1000 by 10s, independently and everyone as a whole class, and as a reward, they got a class pet!
Their stuffed polar bear was purchased through a company that gives back to endangered species and allows them to track a LIVE polar bear! They get updates on its movement: how far, how fast, and where it moves. They also get pictures and videos of the polar bear. They met “NaNook” yesterday and started tracking her.
They are learning about the polar bear and its habitat, the food it eats, and where/when hibernation might take place.
They are in love and so excited to track NaNook all year and watch as she moves around Canada!
