Testing Information

There are different types of tests that can help students analyze your abilities:

Aptitude Tests

Aptitude Tests are broad-ranging assessments of your personal abilities -- for example, whether you are good with spatial relationships or clerical speed and accuracy, mechanical reasoning or scientific reasoning. The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is an example of this type of test.

Interest Inventories

Interest Inventories show your relative preferences for work-related activities. Check out Xello (formerly Career Cruising), where you can create an account and start planning for college and careers.

If you at all interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers, www.careercornerstone.org is a great resource for you. Another site to check out is www.mynextmove.org/.

Achievement Tests

Achievement Tests measure the level to which you've developed skills in academic areas, such as reading, math or science. The ACT and SAT are examples of achievement tests.

PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholarship Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test)

The PSAT/NMSQT is recommended, in preparation for the SAT, to juniors who are considering out-of-state colleges or military academies or to students who may score high enough to qualify for a scholarship. It is the qualifying test for entry into the National Merit Scholarship Program. The test must be taken in your junior year if you want to compete for the program. For more information, visit http://www.nationalmerit.org/  Locally, the PSAT is a necessary first step for a scholarship from Weyerhaeuser.

ACT (American College Test)

The ACT is a college entrance exam. It is not required for admission to community and business colleges. Registration is done online for all national test dates, and deadlines are approximately one month before the test date. The tests are given on Saturdays. The school code for GHS is 231785. You can get more information at www.act.org.

SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)

The SAT is required for admission to some out-of-state colleges and universities. This test is now part of the Michigan Merit Exam and is given to all juniors in April at no cost. It is also given nationally on Saturdays. You can get more information at www.collegeboard.com.

ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery)

The ASVAB is an interest inventory and aptitude test administered by the military, but you do not have to be interested in a career in the military to take the test. There is no charge; however, you must sign up in the Counseling Office. The test is offered once each year at the high school, generally in December.

AP (Advanced Placement®) Test

AP® tests are offered in several different subject areas and are taken for credit or advanced academic placement at college. GHS offers Advanced Placement classes in English Composition & Literature, English Language & Composition, Calculus AB & BC, Statistics, Biology, U.S. History, European History, Psychology, Spanish and Chemistry. AP exams are given in May. Scores range from 1 to 5; most colleges require at least a 3 before giving credit.

For more information, see the Advanced Placement page on the CASD website and visit the AP website.
