Welcome to Grayling Middle School!
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at GMS, where "the Good Stuff''s in the Middle." As a Class B school, we house grades 5-8 of the Crawford AuSable School District. We encourage our students' intellectual growth through our curriculum, cultural growth through our fine arts offerings and physical fitness through our athletic programs. After checking out all our programs and activities, we are sure you will agree that "the Good Stuff's in the Middle" of the Crawford AuSable School District!
We recently updated our class schedule to a 7-hour day to allow for more reading and writing practice time during school hours. We start at 8:10 a.m. and dismiss at 3:11 p.m.
GMS Identified as High Performing School in 2019 CAP report
Grayling Middle School was named by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy as a high performing school in the 2019 Context and Performance Report Card.
The CAP report ranks over 2,000 public elementary and middle schools across Michigan. GMS ranked in the 90th percentile and was given a grade of “A” in this year’s rankings. It was also ranked in the top 100 for Sustained High Performance.
“This recognition is a reflection of the efforts of our entire K-12 staff and the tremendous support we receive from our communities,” said Superintendent Justin Gluesing. “The successes at our elementary school are carried forward into middle and high school, each grade level building on the efforts of the prior year.”
New gym floor
In summer 2020, the GMS gym floor suffered water damage resulting from a broken water valve, and the entire floor and subfloor had to be replaced. The new floor looks similar to the original -- but with several noticeable differences: The center logo has been updated, and the coloring in the key area is actually a stain. We have also added some more floor markings, including a center volleyball court and pickleball courts.
Other Important Information for Parents and Students:
Our Mission
To provide a gradual transition from elementary school to high school addressing academic, physical, social and emotional needs where the staff and facilities are focused on a positive learning environment for all students.
Note to Parents of Athletes
GMS's policy on all extra-curricular and conference programs is the "PWP" (Pass While Participating) policy, which mandates students must be passing all classes in order to participate or compete in these programs.
Homework Lab
Homework Lab -- a quiet environment for students to work on their assignments and get assistance from a GMS teacher -- meets every Tuesday through Friday (except on the last day before a vacation). Students must be in the Media Center by 3:10 p.m. and stay until Homework Lab is over at 4:10 p.m. Parents need to make their own arrangements for student pick-up.
