AP® Scholars - 2017

Twenty-four GHS Advanced Placement® Scholars Named

Sixteen graduates of Grayling High School and eight current seniors have earned the designation of AP® Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Exams. Only 22 percent of the more than 2,200,000 high school students worldwide who took these exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of courses and exams taken.  

Eleven GHS students qualified as AP Scholars, a designation given to those students who earn grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams:  

• Kaitlin Bennett, daughter of Sam and Gayenell Gentelia, is currently a senior at GHS.
• Anna Fisher, daughter of Tamara and Fred Fisher III, is currently a senior at GHS.
• Ashley Haring, daughter of Marc and Angela Haring, is attending Central Michigan University. Madison Helsel, daughter of Ken and Cheri Helsel, is currently a senior at GHS.
• Lea Hilliker, daughter of Marian Hilliker, is currently a senior at GHS.
• Dominic Misuraca, son of Thomas Misuraca and Laura Nelson, is a freshman at Michigan Technological University.
• Riley Morley, daughter of Mary Beth Morley and Robert Morley, attends Northern Michigan University. Seth Patterson, son of Chad and Lori Patterson, attends Central Michigan University.
• Flynn Powers, son of Joe and Cyndi Powers, is currently a senior at GHS.
• Jacob Proffitt, son of Jerry and Kathy Proffitt, is enrolled in the MAT Squared Program at Baker College, Cadillac.
• Skyler Robison, daughter of Brody and Cari Robison, is a freshman at the University of Oregon.

Eight students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award, which is granted to students who earn an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more AP Exams: 

• Connor Beard, son of Connie and Gordon Beard, is a freshman at the University of Michigan.
• Mollie Binert, daughter of Mark Binert-Armstrong and Andrea Binert, is a freshman at Central Michigan University.
• Alyssa Cobb, daughter of Loren and Amy Cobb, is currently a senior at GHS.
• Madison Jones, daughter of Steven and Paulette Jones, is attending Central Michigan University. Haley Kocefas, daughter of Pete and Cathy Kocefas, is currently a senior at GHS.
• Parker Learman-Blaauw, son of Brie and Gerard Molaison, is currently a senior at GHS.
• Alyssa Quiñones, daughter of Emil and Rebecca Quiñones, is a freshman at the University of Michigan.
• Jennifer Sheehan, daughter of Mark and Kelly Sheehan, is a freshman at Olivet Nazarene University.     

Five students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction designation, which is granted to students who earn an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams:  

• Alayna Cobb, daughter of Loren and Amy Cobb, is a freshman at Spring Arbor University.
• Daniel Elliott, son of Dave Elliott and Tammi Seeley, is a freshman at Central Michigan University.
  Easton Farrell, son of Brian and Judi Farrell, is a freshman at the University of Michigan.
• Molly Leslie, daughter of Tod and Karen Leslie, is a freshman at Saginaw Valley State University.
• Paige Millikin, daughter of Jack and Melissa Millikin, is a freshman at Central Michigan University.  

In addition to the AP Scholar with Distinction Award, Easton Farrell qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. A National AP Scholar designation is an exceptional achievement.

Grayling High School has offered AP classes since 1980. The first course offered was English Composition.  Since that time, the program has expanded, and students are now able to take AP courses in biology, calculus (AB and BC), statistics, computer science chemistry, English language and literature, psychology, Spanish, U.S. history, and European history. Students at GHS have also taken AP exams in French, German, human geography, physics, U.S. government and world history, through independent study. The number of GHS students taking AP exams has steadily increased over the years, with 76 students taking a total of 142 exams this year.  As well, test scores continue to be above the state and national averages.
