Seventeen GHS Advanced Placement® Scholars Named
Fourteen Grayling High School graduates and three current seniors have earned the designation of AP® Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Exams. Only 18 percent of the more than 2,000,000 high school students worldwide who took these exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.
The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of courses and exams taken.
Eleven GHS students qualified as AP Scholars, a designation given to those students who earn grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams.
Sophia Do, daughter of Kevin Do and Monica Tran, is a freshman at the University of Michigan where she is pursuing a degree in chemical engineering.
Christina Gilkerson, daughter of Jonathon and Bethany Gilkerson, is a GHS senior.
Hailey Hartman, daughter of Paul and Heather Hartman, is attending Central Michigan University in its honors program and majoring in biology.
Madison Hehir, daughter of Piper Lesko and Nathaniel Hehir, is a GHS senior.
Logan Joseph, son of Mike and Renee Joseph, is studying sports medicine at Olivet College.
Emily Kowalski, daughter of Mary Kowalski and Darrell Kowalski, is attending the University of South Florida on her way to becoming an anesthesiologist.
Genisus Rice-Romain, daughter of Bonnie Romain and David Rice, is studying in Ferris State University’s pre-med program.
Katherine Snider, daughter of Thomas and Jill Snider, is a GHS senior.
Josie Trudgeon, daughter of Rene and Kathy Trudgeon, is studying animation at Central Michigan University.
Amairis Tuck, daughter of Matt and Anne Tuck, is studying graphic design at Grand Valley State University.
David Walsh, son of Walter and Gretchen Walsh, is attending the University of Michigan where he is enrolled in the pre-med program.
Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award, which is granted to students who earn an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more AP Exams.
Joshua Neal, son of Mr. Neal and Mrs. Samkowiak, is earning a teaching degree at Central Michigan University.
Dana Trudgeon, daughter of Rene and Kathy Trudgeon, is attending Northern Michigan University where she is enrolled in their pre-physician assistant program.
Four students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction designation, which is granted to students who earn an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Tyler Brandt, son of Chris and Christine Brandt, is attending the University of Michigan School of Engineering for computer science. In addition to the AP Scholar with Distinction Award, Tyler qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a five-point scale on all AP Exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. A National AP Scholar designation is an exceptional achievement.
Blane Johnston, son of Todd and Deanna Johnston, is studying civil engineering at Lawrence Technological University.
Miranda Makowski, daughter of Steven and Annetta Makowski, is studying human biology at the University of Michigan.
Esabella Powers, daughter of Joe and Cyndi Powers, is studying biochemistry at Grand Valley State University.
Justin Gluesing, CASD Superintendent, recognizes the value of the College Board's Advanced Placement program. "We are very proud of our AP program, our students and our teachers," said Gluesing. "Our AP program has continued to grow over the years, and it is tremendous to see the accomplishments of our graduates and current students."
Grayling High School has offered AP classes since 1980. The first course offered was English Composition. Since that time, the program has expanded, and students are now able to take AP courses in biology, calculus (AB and BC), statistics, computer science, chemistry, English language and literature, psychology, Spanish, U.S. history, and European history. Students at GHS have also taken AP exams in French, German, human geography, physics and U.S. government and world history through independent study. The number of GHS students taking AP exams has steadily increased over the years, with 85 students taking a total of 137 exams last year. As well, test scores continue to be above the state and national averages.
