AP® Scholars - 2014

GHS Advanced Placement® Scholars Named

Nine graduates of Grayling High School have earned the designation of AP® Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement exams. Only 20 percent of the more than 2.1 million high school students worldwide who took these exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of courses and exams taken. 

Three GHS students qualified as AP Scholars, a designation given to those students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams: 

• Rachel Dubriwny, daughter of David and Karen Dubriwny, is a freshman at West Virginia University, where she is pursuing a degree in petroleum engineering. 
• Emily Leslie, daughter of Todd and Karen Leslie, is studying pre-pharmacy at Northern Michigan University. 
• Ghayge Toomey, son of Kellie Dole and Neal Toomey, is studying pre-medicine at the University of Michigan-Flint. 

Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor award, which is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams: 

• Meghan Beard, daughter of Gordon and Connie Beard, is studying pre-medicine at the University of Michigan.
• Jessica Lohr, daughter of Vickie and Edward Lohr, attends the Honors College of Eastern Michigan University, majoring in political science and economics. 
• Gabrielle Smith, daughter of Dean and Lori Smith, is a student at Central Michigan University, majoring in pre-law.

Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction designation, which is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams: 

• Brooklyn Golnick, daughter of Ann Patterson and Charles Golnick, is attending Grand Valley State University to study international relations, linguistics and anthropology. 
• Meagan Malm, daughter of Dave and Ann Malm, is a student at the University of Michigan. 
• Carlie Sloan, daughter of Mark and Valerie Sloan, is studying  pre-medicine at the University of Notre Dame.

Grayling High School has offered AP classes since 1980. The first course offered was English Composition. Since that time, the program has expanded, and students are now able to take AP courses in biology, calculus, chemistry, English language and literature, Spanish, U.S. History and European History. GHS students have also taken AP exams in French, Spanish, German, human geography and world history through independent study.
