AP® Scholars - 2013

GHS Advanced Placement® Scholars

Eleven GHS graduates have earned the designation of AP® Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Exams. Only 20 percent of the more than 2.1 million high school students worldwide who took these exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of courses and exams taken. 

Six GHS students qualified as AP Scholars, a designation given to those students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams: 

• Emma Burke, daughter of Cheryl Postma, is a freshman at Lake Superior State University, where she is studying history and sociology.
• Jacob Cochrane, son of John and Michele Cochrane, attends Michigan State University, where he plans to earn a degree in engineering.
• Wesley Dean, son of Bill and Cory Dean, attends the University of Michigan, where he is in the pre-medicine program.
• Olivia Dikin, daughter of Bob and Cyndi Dikin, attends Aquinas College where she is studying biology.
• Levi Korneli, son of Fred and Sally Korneli, is a freshman at Michigan State University.
• Angeline Rouston, daughter of Susan Thiel and Kenneth Rouston, attends the University of Michigan, where she is majoring in psychology.  

Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award, which is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more AP Exams: 

• Shanley Dorn and Stanna Dorn are the daughters of Michael and Jeanne Dorn. Shanley is attending Alma College to pursue a double major in music performance-percussion and accounting. Stanna attends Hope College, where she is pursuing a double major in flute performance and chemistry.
• Scott Parkinson is the son of Jeffery and Jeanne Parkinson. He attends Michigan State University, where he is studying actuarial science and history.

Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction designation, which is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams: 

• Gloria Neilson, daughter of Louis Neilson, is studying political science and world religions at Case Western Reserve University.
• Tyler Powers, son of Joe and Cyndi Powers, is currently a freshman at Michigan State University, where he is studying to become a veterinarian.

Grayling High School has offered AP classes since 1980. The first course offered was English Composition. Since that time, the program has expanded, and students are now able to take AP courses in art, biology, calculus, chemistry, English language and literature, U.S. History and European History. Students at GHS have also taken AP exams in French, Spanish, German, Human Geography and World History through independent study.
