AP® Scholars - 2012

GHS AP® Scholars Named

Eight GHS graduates and one current senior have earned the designation of AP® Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Exams. Only 18 percent of the more than 1,900,000 high school students worldwide who took these exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of courses and exams taken. 

Six GHS students qualified as AP Scholars, a designation given to students who earn grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams: 

• Griffin Dean, son of Bill and Cory Dean, attends the University of Michigan, studying biology and English literature.
• Hillary Fenton, daughter of George and Gail Fenton, attends Central Michigan University to study creative writing and business advertising. 
• Natasha Kappers, daughter of Kathy and Jeff Eckola, attends Kirtland Community College, where she is studying art. 
• Tyler Powers, son of Joe and Cyndi Powers, is currently a senior at GHS. He plans to attend Michigan State University to become a veterinarian. 
• Heather Ruddy, daughter of Jay Ruddy and Kim Ruddy, studies at Cornerstone University, majoring in pre-medicine. 
• Nicholas Wells, son of Gerald and Bonnie Wells, is studying geological engineering at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

One student qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award, which is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more AP Exams:

• Evan Korneli, son of Fred and Sally Korneli, is studying history while also pursuing pre-medicine studies at Michigan State University. 

Two students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction designation, which is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams: 

• Taylor Duvall, daughter of Larry Duvall and Brandie Sykes, is a freshman at the University of Southern Florida where she is a pre-medicine student. 
• Darcy Greer, daughter of Luther and Jamie Greer, attends Michigan State University, studying psychology and Spanish.

Grayling High School has offered AP classes since 1980. The first course offered was English Composition. Since that time, the program has expanded, and students are now able to take AP courses in art, biology, calculus, chemistry, English language and literature, U.S. History and European History. Students at GHS have also taken AP exams in French, Spanish, German, Human Geography and World History through independent study.

CASD Named to AP Honor Roll - Fall 2007

The Crawford AuSable School District is one of only 539 school districts in the nation to be recognized by the College Board with a place on its AP District of the Year Awards: 3rd Annual Honor Roll for opening AP classroom doors to a significantly broader pool of students while maintaining or improving the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher.

Criteria used for inclusion in the AP Achievement District Honor Roll include:
• Examination of three years of AP data (2010 to 2012).
• Increase in participation in/access to AP by at least 4% in large districts, at least 6% in medium districts and at least 11% in small districts.
• A steady or increasing percentage of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native students.
• Performance levels maintained or improved when comparing the percentage of students in 2012 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2010, or the school has already attained a performance level in which more than 70 percent of the AP students are scoring a 3 or higher.
