AP® Scholars - 2015

Fifteen GHS AP® Scholars Named

Fourteen graduates of Grayling High School and one current senior have earned the designation of AP® Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement exams.Only 18 percent of the more than 2,000,000 high school students worldwide who took these exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on the number of courses and exams taken.  

Seven GHS students qualified as AP Scholars, a designation given to those students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams:

• Allison Dorn, daughter of Michael and Jeanne Dorn, attends Michigan Technological University, studying mechanical engineering.
• Courtney Hatfield, daughter of Todd and Cheryl Hatfield, attends Northwestern Michigan College, with plans to transfer to Grand Valley State University to pursue a degree in the medical or drafting field.
• Emmett Helsel, son of Jake and Ginger Helsel, attends Saginaw Valley State University, where he is a pre-medicine student.
• Zachary Joseph, son of Michael and Renee Joseph, is currently a student at Central Michigan University, studying biology.
• Michael Macfalda, son of Mike Macfalda and Carrie Macfalda, studies history and education at Saginaw Valley State University.
• Andrea Stephan, daughter of Colleen and David Stephan, is studying aerospace engineering at Western Michigan University.
• Logan Walker, son of Cindy Walker and Jason Walker, is a freshman at Central Michigan University and intends to study physical therapy.

Five students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award, which is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams:

• Charles Bennett, son of Gayenell and Sam Gentelia, is currently a senior at GHS. He will be applying to various colleges with the goal of studying computer science.
• Hannah Golnick, daughter of Mark and Kay Golnick, is attending Northwood University where she will be pursuing both a bachelor's and a master’s degree in finance.
• Rachel Money, daughter of Jack and Michelle Money, is attending Central Michigan University.
• Casie Wakeley, daughter of Jackie Sheldon, Gary Sheldon and Mike Wakeley, is attending Michigan State University to study criminal justice.
• Boomer Wingard, son of Loretta Wingard, is attending Central Michigan University’s Honor Program, where he is studying political science.

Three students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction designation, which is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams:

• Zachary Cheney, son of Brian and Lynnette Cheney, is a student at Oakland University in Rochester where he is studying actuarial science as a member of the school's Honors Program.
• Emily Dorn, daughter of Michael and Jeanne Dorn, is a freshman at Olivet College, where she is pursuing a degree in mathematics with a minor in history.
• Brieann Koves is the daughter of Donna Brown and Mark Brown and Steven Koves and Sarah Ross­ Koves; she plans to study biotechnology at the University of Michigan.

Grayling High School has offered AP classes since 1980. The first course offered was English Composition. Since that time, the program has expanded, and students are now able to take AP courses in biology, calculus (AB and BC), statistics, chemistry, English language and literature, psychology, Spanish, U.S. history and European history. GHS students have also taken AP exams in French, German, human geography, physics, U.S. government and world history through independent study.

The number of GHS students taking AP exams has steadily increased over the years, with 60 students taking a total of 109 exams this year. As well, test scores continue to be above the state and national averages.
