He graduated from the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science and the Arts in 2004 with a B.S. degree in biology, and he earned a master of public health in 2008 and a Ph.D. in epidemiologic sciences in 2016 -- both from the U-M School of Public Health.
Dr. Petrie has been a major or cited contributor in over 30 publications and has done numerous talks and poster presentations at conferences.
Since 2016, he has been a research investigator with the Department of Epidemiology at U-M School of Public Health (SPH). His research currently receives nearly $10 million in support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
Previously, he was a guest lecturer for SPH courses for four semesters in 2016-2017, a graduate student research assistant (2012-2016), a research area specialist intermediate (2018-2012), and a research assistant (2006-2008) -- also with the Department of Epidemiology at U-M SPH -- and he was a research technician associate at the Immunology Core Laboratory at U-M Medical School (2005-2006).
Dr. Petrie currently serves on the doctoral committee of U-M SPH Department of Epidemiology and in 2016 was co-chair of the department's epidemiology panel committee. He is a grant reviewer for the Welcome Trust Training Fellowship in Public Health and Tropical Medicine and is an ad hoc manuscript reviewer for 13 journals related to his field. He is also a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and the International Society for Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses (ISIRV).
In 2010, Josh married his high school sweetheart, Kaylan Kimbrell, and they currently live in Ypsilanti. In his free time, he enjoys riding bikes, playing his bass guitar, making beer, watching birds, and camping.
He is the oldest son of David and Kay (Ely) Petrie. Both of his parents and his siblings attended CASD schools.
