Class of 2005
Career Pathway: Health Sciences
Dr. Jennifer Emmons was nominated by Jeff and Nadine Emmons.
Jenni graduated from Grayling High School in 2005 and graduated cum laude from Albion College with a bachelor of science degree in biology, anthropology and pre-medicine. She continued on to Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she earned her medical degree in 2013.
Jennifer worked with her father Jeff at Grayling Pharmacy and for Albion College's admissions office as a tour guide. She also worked for Albion's biology department as a teaching assistant, a position for which she earned an award for excellence in student laboratory teaching given by the Albion biology faculty. She also traveled to Peru to gather data for the Center for Disease Control and the World Health Organization.
Dr. Emmons is just completing her first of three years of residency at McLaren Macomb Hospital as an internal medicine resident. She hopes to follow up her residency with a cardiology fellowship. She has volunteered for the Special Olympics in soccer and cycling as well as at the AuSable Free Clinic.
Both of her parents are very proud of her professional accomplishments and who she is as a person. They are also grateful to everyone from the Crawford AuSable School District who helped and inspired her.
Dr. Emmons wrote in her personal statement for residency that she has six angles to help her succeed in medicine: Being an avid reader allows her to learn but to also sift through mountainous amounts of information regarding a patient. Being an adventurer and surviving the climb to Machu Picchu made her fight to finish but allowed her a greater appreciation for the city and the journey due to the effort to reach it. Being a musician, she mastered multitasking while harmonizing and working with others. Being crafty, she is detailed-oriented, follows patterns and translates visions into reality all while honing her suturing skills. Being a cyclist who completes 100-mile rides, she models a healthy lifestyle for her patients and feeds the competitive fires by climbing the mountain while providing the clarity to process life. Her sixth angle is being a resident. Her past experiences all play into her aspiration to be an exceptional internist.
