Information for Parents
EDUCATION BY CHOICE, NOT BY CHANCE
These high school years are very important to your child's future. Grayling High School offers many resources to help you and your high school student plan for the future. Here is a list of some of the opportunities you should be aware of in the next four years:
Eighth Grade Parent Information Night:
Every year, at the same time that counselors are introducing the eighth graders to the high school scheduling process, parents are invited to an evening meeting so that they get the same information.
At the start of every school year, a freshman orientation is held prior to the first day of school. Parents are also welcome and encouraged to attend.
EDPs (Educational Development Plans):
Student will be developing an EDP with their counselor. This is a good opportunity to make sure that the courses they take will help them reach their goals. Parents are welcome to set up appointments with their child's counselor to develop the EDP.
Every fall, Kirtland Community College hosts a college fair, where representatives of many post-secondary educational institutions present information about their schools.
This is a pre-SAT test for juniors that helps them assess their abilities and prepare for college. It is also the qualifying test for entry into the National Merit Scholarship Program. The test must be taken in a student's ;junior year if they want to compete for the program. For more information, visit http://www.nationalmerit.org/
This is the college entrance exam most often taken by Michigan students planning on attending college.
This is the other college entrance exam taken by students wishing to apply to college. Starting in school year 2015-16, the SAT will be given instead of the ACT as part of the required state testing.
Financial Aid Information:
Once a year, the counselors, in conjunction with a college financial aid office, present an evening of financial aid information for students and their parents.
Counseling Office Resources:
In addition to college catalogs, video tapes, college and scholarship applications, the Counseling Office has books on parenting, study strategies, careers, standardized test preparation and summer opportunities for teens that can be checked out.
