Aptitude
Tests
are broad-ranging assessments of your personal
abilities; for example, whether you are good with spatial
relationships or clerical speed and accuracy, mechanical reasoning
or scientific reasoning. The
ASVAB
(Armed Services Vocational Aptitude
Battery) is an example of this type of test.
Interest Inventories
show your relative preferences for
work-related activities. Students are encouraged to explore their
career interests with
www.careercruising.org.
(For more information, click on our career-planning link.)
Achievement Tests measure the level to
which you've developed skills in academic areas, such as reading,
math or science.
NWEA Students
at Grayling High School continue to take the NWEA tests in their
ninth grade year. This state-aligned computer-based testing
system, MAP, is built on 30 years of research and refinement, and
adapts to the student in real-time as the test progresses for a
pinpoint picture of learning achievement and readiness, allowing
teachers to adapt to student needs.
MME
The State of Michigan requires all juniors
to take all of the tests in the Michigan Educational Assessment
Program. These tests are given during the school day, and dates vary
from year to year. They will be announced and are on the school
calendar. The
link below will direct you to the site. Part of the MME is the
ACT (see below). Grayling High School has many resources to
assist students in doing well on the MME. www.michigan.gov/mde.
The PSAT/NMSQT
(Preliminary Scholarship Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test) is recommended, in preparation for the SAT, to
juniors who are considering out-of-state colleges or military
academies or to students who may score high enough to qualify for a
scholarship. It is a necessary first step for a scholarship from
Weyerhaeuser.
The ACT (American
College Test) is required for admission to any Michigan four-year
college or university. It is not required for admission to community
and business colleges, but all juniors will be taking it as part of
the state mandated MME. ACT scores are also used to determine
which students will be eligible for entry into the Michigan Competitive Scholarship
Competition. Registration forms for all national test dates for the
ACT are available in the Counseling
Office and must be mailed in approximately one month before the test
date. The tests are given on Saturdays. The school code for GHS is
231785. www.act.org.
The
SAT
(Scholastic Aptitude Test) is required for admission
to some out-of-state colleges and universities. You should take this
test if you are considering an out-of-state school. The tests are
given on Saturdays. Take it in the spring of your junior year or the
fall of your senior year. www.collegeboard.com.
The
ASVAB (Armed
Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is an interest inventory and
aptitude test administered by the military. However, students do not
have to be interested in a career in the military to take the test.
There is no charge; however, students must sign up in the Counseling
Office. The test is offered once each year at the high school,
generally in December.
A.P. Tests
(Advanced Placement Tests) are offered in several different subject
areas and are taken for credit or advanced academic placement at
college. GHS offers advanced placement classes in English
Composition & Literature, Calculus, Biology, U.S. History, European
History and Chemistry. A.P. Art is also offered at Kirtland
Community College outside of the school day. A.P. exams are given in
May. Scores range from 1 to 5. Most colleges require at least a 3
before giving credit.
