2011 News

The seniors kicked off their final year at GHS with a third consecutive Homecoming Spirit Cup victory. The Class of 2011 swept all of the major competitions: lip sync, float, banner and window.

Kids' Night Out has been a hugely successful fund raiser for the Class of 2011. On December 3, there were over 300 kids in attendance, and a great time was had by all. The next Kids' Night Out event is planned for March 18, 2011.

The Class of 2011 adopted a local family for the holidays. The program is run by the Crawford County Department of Human Services. We collected gifts for our five-member family, and we also created a food basket with a Save-A-Lot gift certificate for their Christmas dinner. Our family gift was a stay at the Great Wolf Lodge, a $50 gas card to cover their transportation there and back and a $50 Big Boy gift card that can be used while staying at the lodge or here in Grayling. Several members of the class spent an hour after school wrapping all of the donated gifts and six senior Senate members accompanied the class advisors when the gifts were delivered to the DHS office. The class received a warm thank you note from the family. It was a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

The 3rd Annual Prom Dress Resale organized by the Class of 2011 will take place in the GHS cafeteria on Saturday, January 29, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Anyone wishing to sell or donate a dress or related items can take them to Teresa Bonamie in the GHS counseling office. Click here for more information, or contact Mrs. Bonamie at 989-344-3512.

The Class of 2011 conducted its final Kids' Night Out event on Friday, March 18. This was our most successful event ever and we again entertained more than 300 children. The event will not disappear with the Class of 2011. Next year it will be a joint effort between the yearbook staff and the Class of 2016. Beyond next year, it will be run by the Class of 2016.

The countdown has begun to the seniors last day! The Class of 2011 will bid GHS farewell on May 27.

Notes from the 2009-2010 school year:

The junior class claimed the Homecoming Spirit Cup for the second year in a row! On their way to securing the cup, they won major point competitions, including the float, downtown window decorating and lip sync.

Another successful Kids' Night Out was conducted by the junior class on December 11. Approximately 200 kids were in attendance, and a good time was had by all. This has proven to be a very successful fund raiser for the Class of 2011. The next Kids' Night Out is planned for March 19, 2010.

The Class of 2011 collected over 20 boxes of clothing, diapers, wipes and related items and delivered them to the Baby Closet housed in the Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church in December, 2009.

The juniors reigned victorious again, winning the Snowgoing Spirit Belt for the 3rd consecutive year! In addition to winning the dress competition 4 out of 5 days, the Class of 2011 also won the lip sync, door decorating and showcase competitions. Congratulations, juniors!

During the February 13, 2010, Prom Dress Resale, organized by the Class of 2011, 26 dresses were sold, and 8 were given away. Girls came from Grayling, Roscommon, St. Helen, Houghton Lake and Mio. The juniors made no money on this event as it was a community service project. This was the second year that the Class of 2011 organized the event, and they plan to do so again as seniors.

The 2010 Prom was a huge success! There were 265 students in attendance at the Lakeside Comfort Inn and Suites on April 17. Photos can be viewed at www.shutteryou.com or http://flickr.com/gp/49367643@N06/6y72U6.

Being a mom is often a thankless job. Some moms have it tougher than others, and they are never recognized for their efforts. To help brighten their Mothers' Day,  the Class of 2011 sent floral arrangements to the 11 moms currently residing at River House Shelter.

The Class of 2011 sponsored a Grayling Little League team for the second year in a row. Our major division softball team was undefeated during the 2010 season!

This year our class also made a donation to a local Boy Scout Troop in need of camping supplies, and we made a donation to the family of a classmate whose grandfather incurred enormous medical bills after experiencing severe health issues.

Senior Absence Policy

GHS has implemented a Senior Absence Policy to ensure that students are taking full advantage of their senior year. Often times excessive absences lead to the student earning NC (No Credit) and missing valuable class room instruction:

1. Students with more than two No Credits (NCs) at the end of the second and third trimesters combined and thereafter due to attendance will not participate in Commencement exercises.
-OR-
2
. Beginning after the second official count day of the school year, students who excuse themselves, have unexcused absences or whose parent excuses the student excessively for one or more classes for reasons not covered in the Attendance Policy (usually because the student does not need that class to graduate) will face the following:
     A. The student will meet with parents and administration, and the student may be removed from the classroom and given a No Credit (NC) at the end of the trimester. An NC is figured into the student's GPA as an E.
     B. Once this happens for more than two course subjects/classes, the student will NOT participate in Commencement exercises.
     C. Dropping a CTE class at Kirtland Community College equals three No Credits (NCs)

Special Note: An excused absence is when the student signs out with the Main Office and leaves with parental permission or as according to the 18-year-old sign-out policy (see below).

"Skipping" is an unexcused absence. It occurs when a student is out of any class or lunch period and is not excused. The consequences for skipping will be in addition to the Senior Absence Policy and are explained in the Student Handbook.

18-Year Olds' Sign-Out Policy

·All students must meet with administration to learn the rights associated with signing themselves out of school.
·Students who are 18 must follow the same guidelines as parents when it comes to providing doctor slips, etc.
·Students are NOT allowed to sign out for lunch. Administrative permission is required.
