Professional Learning Communities were
reinvigorated at the beginning of the 2007-08 school year.
Prior to this school year, teams had been participating in monthly
"Looking at Student Work" sessions for about five years. The
momentum was slowing and an opportunity presented itself through the
schedule format change to trimesters allowing groups of teachers to
meet during their conference period on a weekly basis. During
the first trimester, teams followed an agenda which was
prescribed by administration. The second trimester, the
Professional Learning Communities were encouraged to create
activities on their own and submit them to administration for
approval with the requirement that the activity meet two criteria:
collaboration and focus on student achievement. The last
trimester is a combination of both team choice and administrative
