COMPETITIVE Scholarships
for top students

Class of 2011

Following are some of the better-known university scholarship programs in Michigan. This is not a comprehensive list; there are many public and private colleges, and they all have their own scholarship programs. Be sure to find out about the scholarships offered by the college or university you plan to attend, and pay attention to the deadlines in order to be considered.
Central Michigan University
Centralis Competition

By invitation if you have applied and have a 3.5 GPA. Half-day competition, held in conjunction with CMU's Honors Day. Deadline: October 17, 1009. Other awards include scholarships to valedictorians and salutatorians, students with GPAs of 3.4 and the Leaderships Scholarships for students with 3.0 GPAs and records of being active in high school and/or community organizations.

Up to 20 Centralis Gold Awards are granted annually. This scholarship is of a monetary value equivalent to eight semesters of undergraduate tuition (up to 36 credit hours per academic year, including summer sessions). Students who receive this award are admitted to the Honors Program and must agree to complete the Centralis Gold Protocol, which outlines required honors course work, foreign language or computer literacy, advanced seminar work, community service and a senior project. www.cmich.edu/x3336.xml
 
Michigan State University
Alumni Distinguished Scholarships

Based on intellectual performance; covers tuition, fees, room & board and $1,000 per year for expenses. Students compete by examination on MSU's campus in February. Invitations are sent to the most outstanding students who apply for admission by November 1. Distinguished Freshman Scholarships are also awarded and include tuition and fees for eight semesters. Eastern Michigan University
Presidential and Regents-Plus Scholarships

EMU will award millions of dollars in academic scholarships this year. Most will be awarded to students who participate in the annual Presidential Scholarship Competition on December 5 or December 12, 2009. Sixteen students will receive EMU's largest academic award, a four-year full-ride Presidential Scholarship, valued at approximately $64,000 over four years. Twenty-nine students will be awarded the Regents Gold Scholarship (tuition and fees for 30 credits a year, renewable for four years, approximately $32,000). All students who participate in the competition and meet the minimum qualifications are guaranteed a minimum $12,000 four-year Regents Scholarship. In addition, students may be awarded a $1,000 Honors Scholarship and/or a $1,000 Housing Scholarship.

Student must complete an EMU application as well as a separate application for the scholarship. They must have a 3.7 GPA or a 3.5 GPA with an ACT score of 25. The deadline is November 24, 2009.

Michigan Technological University
University Scholar Awards
Four-year scholarships awarded through an on-campus competition to superior students nominated by Michigan high school teachers. Values equal the amount of full-time tuition and room & board plus an allowance for books.

Leading Scholars Program: Competitively awarded to high school seniors with exemplary leadership attributes and outstanding scholarly achievement. An essay and a teacher nomination is due by October 15 of the senior year: Full-time tuition, room & board and a $1,000 per year stipend.

Presidential Scholars Program: Competitively awarded to students of the current year's graduating class based on an index that considers high school academic record, including ACT or SAT score, cumulative GPA and class rank (if available): $1,000-$4,000 per year. http://www.admissions.mtu.edu/scholar/
 
Northern Michigan University
Presidential Scholars Competition
Students are invited to compete on November 1-2 or 8-9, 2009, if they apply in time and have an ACT score of 24 or higher and a recomputed cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Scholarships awarded range from the Presidential/Harden, worth full tuition, most required fees and on-campus room & board, to the leadership scholarships, valued at $2,000 a year. http://webb.nmu.edu/Admissions/SiteSections/Apply/PresidentialScholars.shtml
 
Wayne State University
Scholars Competition
Competitive scholarship. Scholars Day is a series of invitation-only events during which the Irvin D. Reid College recruits its freshman class from the university's most promising first-year applicants. During the event, students will participate in a group interview, campus tour and various presentations. Every students who is invited and participates in Scholars Day receives an award. The minimum award amount for the 2008 Scholars Day was a tuition scholarship of $1,500 a year for four years. Participants are also considered for increased scholarship offers up to and including the Presidential Scholarship as well as privately-funded scholarships. Western Michigan University
Medallion Program
Calling all high school seniors graduating in 2010! Have you sent in your admissions application to WMU? The Office of Admissions needs all documents for admission (application, $35 application fee, high school transcript and test scores) by December 4, 2009, in order to consider you for the Medallion Scholarship Competition. In order to qualify for the competition, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) and the end of their junior year and an ACT composite score of 26 or higher or a SAT math and critical reading score of 1170.

Each Medallion Scholarship is valued at $40,000 across four years ($10,000 per year). All Medallion Scholars become members of WMU's Lee Honors College. Benefits of the honors college include a freshman mentoring program, smaller class sizes, individual academic advising and much more. .http://www.wmich.edu/medallion/

These are the scholarships that we anticipate will again be offered locally to members of the Class of 2011. Applications are available in the Counseling Office beginning in mid-February. 7-11/Garb-Ko Ron Fountain Memorial Scholarship - open to students with a 2.75 minimum GPA. The deadline to apply is April 1. This application is only available in the GHS Counseling Office.
 
American Legion Auxiliary Post 106 - open to all girls.
 
American Legion Post 106 - open to all students.
 
Art Clough Memorial - open to students with a GPA of 3.0 or better and planning to attend a non-private Michigan college.
 
Benjamin Henig, M.D., Memorial - open to female students planning to attend a four-year university to pursue studies in the sciences.
 
Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan - open to all students.
 
Crawford AuSable School District Board Scholarship - open to students with a 2.75 minimum GPA and who are able to demonstrate financial need.
 
Crawford County Deputy Sheriff's Association - open to residents of Crawford County with a GPA of 3.0 or higher; students must attend college full time and major in a law-enforcement program. This application is only available in the GHS Counseling Office.
 
Dennis Ormsbee Honorary Music Scholarship from the Grayling Viking Band Boosters - open to four-year band students studying for a career in music or music education.
 
Douglas Slater, M.D. Health Sciences Scholarship - open to students preparing for a career in health sciences. Must have a 3.0 minimum GPA and be able to demonstrate community service and leadership.
 
Ellen Mae Rasmussen Klug Memorial Scholarship from Burning Bush Tabernacle - open to all students.
 
G. Jerome and Loretta Sorenson Kesseler Memorials - open to all students.
 
GHS Alumni Scholarship - open to all students.
 
Grayling Generating Station - open to all students; deadline to apply is January 31; worth $10,000. This application is only available in the GHS Counseling Office.
 
Grayling Rotary Club Academic Scholarship - open to all students.
 
Grayling Rotary Club Voc-Tech Scholarship - students must be enrolled in a vocational or two-year associate's degree program.
 
Gregory Joseph Petrie Memorial Scholarship - open to all students.
 
Hans E. and Dora J. Lantzsch Scholarship Fund - open to students with a 3.25 minimum GPA, 25 or higher on ACT or 1050 or higher on SAT, and acceptance into a four year public college or university with a declared major.
 
Howard (Whitey) Madsen Memorial - open to students studying for a career in journalism.
 
Irv McIsaac Memorial from the Grayling Country Club - open to all students attending a Michigan college or university
 
Kayla O'Mara Memorial Scholarship - open to all students. This application is only available in the GHS Counseling Office at this time. Click the link to see if the updated application is available online.
 
Kiwanis Stripe Memorial - students must attend Kirtland Community College in a vocational degree program.
 
Kiwanis Club Community Foundation Scholarship - open to all students.
 
Krystan Bazzett Memorial Scholarship from Burger King - students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. The application deadline is January 10. Click here to apply online.
Lions/Lionesses Don Hale Memorial Scholarships  - open to all students.
 
Michigan Retailers Association - open to students who are employed by MRA-member businesses or whose parents own or are employed by MRA-member businesses.
 
Order of the Eastern Star Grayling Chapter #83 - open to all students. This application is only available in the GHS Counseling Office.
 
Otsego Memorial Hospital Foundation - open to students studying for a career in health care. The foundation will be meeting to make changes to the scholarship program. Applications should be available in April.
 
Redskins Football Program - open to students who were Redskin football players or cheerleaders at least one year and played football or were cheerleaders as seniors.
 
Sam Moore Scholarship Fund - open to all students; preference may given to students with an interest in politics.
 

Sandra Miles Memorial Scholarship from AuSable Valley Nor-east'r Assn of Folk - open to students declaring a major in music, art or the performing arts. This application is only available in the GHS Counseling Office.

Tri-Lakes Home Builders Association - open to students planning to study for a career in the home building industry (building, engineering, architecture, decorating, design, drafting, etc.) This application is only available in the GHS Counseling Office.
 
Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 264 - open to students with a 2.7 minimum GPA. This application is only available in the GHS Counseling Office.
