Grayling High School Counseling Department

EDUCATION BY CHOICE, NOT BY CHANCE

Dear Parents:
These high school years are very important to your child's future. Grayling High School offers many resources to help you and your high school student plan for the future. Here is a list of some of the opportunities you should be aware of in the next four years.

Eighth Grade Parent Information Night: Every year, at the same time that counselors are introducing the eighth graders to the high school scheduling process, parents are invited to an evening meeting so that they get the same information.

Freshman Orientation:
At the start of every school year, a freshman orientation is held prior to the first day of school. Parents are also welcome and encouraged to attend.

EXPLORE Testing: This testing offers an opportunity to assess levels of academic achievement. It is done in the fall of the freshman year.

Business Management Support: This class offers students an experience in career exploration and planning, learning employability skills and developing job search skills.

Career Cruising (www.careercruising.com) and CxBridges ( www.bridges.com ): These are proprietary web sites to which all Grayling students and their parents have access. They are very user-friendly and truly great resources for career and educational planning.  See the counselors for passwords.

EDP
's (Educational Development Plans): Student will be developing an EDP with their counselor. This is a good opportunity to make sure that the courses they take will help them reach their goals. Parents are welcome to set up appointments with their child's counselor to develop the EDP.

College Planning Night:  Every year, in the fall, the Counseling Office presents important information for students and parents concerning college preparation and college selection.

College Fair: Every year, again in the fall, Kirtland Community College hosts a college fair, where representatives of most post-secondary educational institutions present information about their schools.

PLAN: This is a pre-ACT test designed to help sophomores do a "reality check" of their interests and abilities.

PSAT: This is a pre-SAT test for juniors which helps them assess their abilities and prepare for college.

ACT: This is the college entrance exam most often taken by Michigan students planning on attending college. It is now given as part of the state achievement test, the MME, which all juniors take in March.

Financial Aid Information: Once a year, the counselors, in conjunction with a college financial aid office, present an evening of financial aid information for students and their parents.

Counseling Office Resources:  In addition to college catalogs, video tapes, college and scholarship applications, the Counseling Office has books on parenting, study strategies, careers, standardized test preparation and summer opportunities for teens that can be checked out .

HOW CAN YOU STAY INFORMED?

The Counseling Office uses many avenues to communicate important information to parents and students. Some of these are:

  • The school district calendar.
  • Daily announcements, which are posted on the GHS webpage.
  • Posters and fliers in the school.
  • Crawford County Avalanche and local radio announcements.
  • School publications such as the Student Handbook and Curriculum Guide
  • Edline
  • Class meetings

WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORTS

If you would like more frequent grading information than what is available through Edline, you may require your child to have a progress report completed by his/her teachers at any time. Forms are available in the counseling office or by clicking here.
