Outlook for 2008
The 2008 baseball campaign looks very bright for the Viking varsity baseball team. It will return 8 or 9 starters from last year's 12-18 team. The veteran squad will have 4 seniors, 3 juniors and 1 sophomore as projected starters. This year's team will be led by Rocky McNamara, Richard Schreiber and Josh Stapleton.

Rocky McNamara was the 2007 team MVP, led the Vikings in 3 categories, RBIs (31), HRs (4) and Fielding % (.975). The 1st baseman was All-LMC, All-District and is working hard in the off season to become more successful this spring.

Richard Schreiber finished the 2007 season with a 7-7 record, striking out 86 batters in 84 innings pitched. Schreiber, who was All-District and Honorable Mention All-LMC, will be a strong presence on the mound. He should be one of the top pitchers in Northern Michigan in 2008.

Josh Stapleton, the 2007 team's leading hitter (.464), All-LMC and All-District selection, will return to centerfield. Stapleton has outstanding speed, and his glove will make it very difficult for hitters seeking hits in centerfield.

Ethan Neuberger, the steady rightfielder, will secure that position in 2008. Neuberger, who worked extremely hard on his game in 2007, is continuing the effort this off season. He also was an Academic All-State Athlete in baseball in '07.

The junior class has two starters returning from last year's varsity. Jake Aubry, who started at 3rd and 2nd last season, may see extended action in the outfield this season. Aubry stepped up his game last season but was hampered by an ankle injury for most of the year. Eric Ferrigan showed his toughness behind the plate for the Vikes last spring. Ferrigan has a great arm and an improving bat and will be a very important part of the team's success. He will also see time at 3rd base. Jimmy Osga, who was brought at the end of the season and played well, will see action up the middle on the infield. Osga, who has great hands and an improving swing, should crack the starting lineup this season. Geo Bindchatel will share the catching duties this season behind the plate. Bindchatel has a great arm and bat coming from the JV team and will also see action at 1st and outfield. Three pitchers moving up from JV are Mike Davis, Dillon Nye and Shane Grove. They all show promising ability. Davis, who just got back into baseball last year, has worked consistently hard to improve on the mound. His confidence improved over the summer, and he is excited about working hard this winter. Nye, who showed improvement last year, will get some starts this year at the varsity level. Grove is a crafty lefthander who will be used as a relief pitcher with a few starts mixed in. Coming off a very successful 2007 on JV, Grove will see a lot of action in '08.

Lucas Pippin,  Andy Hulbert and Tyler Harris all saw limited action last season on the varsity but look to break into the lineup this season. Hulbert has great speed and has worked to improve his game. Pippin showed great promise this past summer both in the field and with the bat; he will challenge for a starting spot. Harris showed he could hit last spring and could have a role as a DH.  Matt Haight, Alex Gabriel and Peter Alexander will make their debut on the big team. Haight made great progress after missing his freshman season due to a broken wrist. Gabriel is a 1st baseman who hit well in '07 and could be a impact player this year. Alexander shows improvement over his freshman year with the bat and fielding. Alexander this season will be looked at on the mound. Last year's "Rookie of the Year" Taylor Desenfants will return to the varsity bigger and stronger. "Peanut," as he is known by his teammates, had a outstanding freshman year at the varsity level both on the mound in the field and with the bat. Starting at second exclusively last season, he will see some action at shortstop in 2008 when not on the mound.

The 2008 Vikings will have varsity experience at every position, which was not the case last season. The players are excited about their chances this spring and are working extremely hard to achieve success. They have all the ingredients to reach new heights for Grayling Baseball.

~ They Will Always Be Remembered ~
A Tribute to Ryan Davis & Josh Mastej

In the fall of 2006, the Grayling baseball program lost two of its past outstanding players in a tragic car accident. Ryan Davis ('05) and Josh Mastej ('06) were not just good athletes but quality young men. They were always willing to go out of their way to help teammates, coaches and anyone else for that matter. They truly were liked by all who met them. As players, they were fierce competitors on the field; they would do whatever was asked of them for the team. They were the ultimate team players. I think I can speak for all the coaches who had the opportunity to instruct these two when I say that every coach wishes he had a  team full of players like them and that we will always be thinking of them. So that future baseball players and coaches remember these players, their names and numbers will appear in the home dugout at the Grayling High School baseball field.
                                        ~ Coach Schneider

The home dugout  on the GHS baseball field has been painted with John Mastej's and Ryan Davis' jersey numbers and names.
