GRAYLING VIKINGS PARENT/COACH COMMUNICATION

PARENT COACH RELATIONSHIP.  Both parenting and coaching are extremely difficult vocations.  By establishing an understanding of each position, we are better able to accept the actions of the other and provide greater benefit to children.  As parents, when your children become involved in our program, you have a right to understand what expectations are placed on your child.  This begins with clear communication from the coach of your child's program.

COMMUNICATION YOU SHOULD EXPECT FROM YOUR SON'S COACH.
1.  Philosophy of the coach.
2.  Expectations the coach has for your child as well as all the players on the team.
3.  Locations and times of all practices and contests.
4.  Team requirements such as equipment, fees, etc..
5.  Procedure should your child be injured during participation.
6.  Discipline that results in the denial of your child's participation.

COMMUNICATION COACHES EXPECT FROM PARENTS.
1.  Concerns expressed directly to the coach.
2.  Notification of any schedule conflicts well in advance.
3.  Specific concern in regard to a coach's philosophy and or expectations.

APPROPRIATE CONCERNS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR COACHES.
1.  The treatment of your child, mentally and physically.
2.  Ways to help your child improve.
3.  Concerns about your child's behavior.

ISSUES NOT APPROPRIATE TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES.
1.  Playing time.
2.  Team strategy.
3.  Play calling.
4.  Other student athletes.

IF YOU HAVE A CONCERN TO DISCUSS WITH A COACH,
THE PROCEDURE YOU SHOULD FOLLOW:

1.  Instruct your son to talk to the coach directly about the problem.
2.  If this does not solve the problem, set up an appointment to talk to the coach about the problem.
3.  If the problem has not been solved, set up an appointment with the athletic director, player and coach.

QUESTIONS THAT PARENTS ASK...................

1.  How do we find out what time the bus leaves for a game?
Each parent will receive a schedule with bus departure times.

2.  My son is sick and does not come to school.  What should I do?
Call Grayling Middle School [344-3558] or Grayling High School [344-3506] & leave a message that your son is sick and will not be able to attend practice.  Please call before 9:00 AM and request homework for your son for the day that he missed.  Also, make sure that you leave a return phone number so that the coach can contact you.

6.  Will we still have practice if school is called off because of adverse weather?
If your son is on a junior high, frosh or junior varsity team, the answer is...............no.  If school gets called off because of weather, there will be no practice for players of junior high, frosh or junior varsity teams.   If your son is a varsity basketball player, we will have practice from 12:00-1:00 PM.  Coach Moffit will contact you in the morning to confirm the practice time.  Our #1 goal is student safety.  If conditions are not safe, please notify Coach Moffit.

7.  What if school is called off on a game day?
Your coach will inform you of the status of the game.   Our coaches will have a phone tree and will begin notifying athletes of the game status around 11:00-11:45 AM.

8.  What is the communication process if there is a potential problem?
According to our CASD  Athletic School Communication Process, have your child sit down with the coach and explain the problem.  If this does not solve the problem, set up a meeting with the coach, player and parent.  If this does not solve the problem, we will meet again and have the athletic director present.
